Brian Platter (The Last Reign)

Brian Platter - The Last Reign

This time around we get up close and personal with Brian Platter, guitarist in the Buffalo, New York, based melodic death metal band The Last Reign.

The first record I ever bought with my own money was…

The 30th Anniversary Transformers Movie Soundtrack on Record Store Day in 2015. I’m a very late bloomer when it comes to vinyl. I’ve always had an interest but thought it was just another expense that I didn’t need. Obviously, that has changed, but I am still picky about the albums I purchase. The 2xLP Transformers soundtrack did me in with the great packaging and color vinyl. I’m a sucker for good packaging.

The record that made me want to make music was…

Although it wasn’t a record, the album was Stevie Ray Vaughan’s In Step. I dabbled with guitar for a year or two before I caught the VH1 Legends story on Stevie Ray Vaughan. It changed my entire future with regards to music. I’m much more of a metal head, but I still consider him to be my favorite guitar player.

The record I’ve played more than any other is…

Gunship – Dark All Day. Gunship is one of the better bands to come out in the last decade.

The record that always make me feel good is…

The High Fidelity Soundtrack. After seeing the film for the first time back in 2000, I felt instantly connected to the main character, Rob Gordon, as portrayed by John Cusack. It wasn’t until after a few viewings that I finally decided to pick up the book and found even more parallels.

The record I turn to when I’m feeling down is…

Bike for Three! – More Heart Than Brains. From artist Buck 65 and producer Greetings from Tuskan, this down tempo electronic hip hop outing features some heavy tones. Diving in to the lyrics head first, you become immersed in this very dark and depressing world. To quote High Fidelity, “Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable or was I miserable because I listened to pop music.”

The record with my favorite cover art is…

Opeth – Still Life 20th Anniversary. Still to this day one of my favorite albums of all time.

The strangest LP I own is…

Lights – Siberia. Not so much strange in and of itself, but more-so in relation to the other vinyls I own.

The rarest LP I own is…

Herod – For Whom the Gods Would Destroy

The last LP I bought was…

Demons & Wizards Self-Titled Remastered

I'm a very tired, black coffee drinking curmudgeon who has been collecting records and cassettes for over forty years. I primarily listen to metal, 80s alternative and jazz. Torche and The Body are my favorite bands to collect.
