Matt Bacon (Dropout Media)

In My Vinyl Offering, we get up close and personal with your favorite musicians and friends to find out the most cherished parts of their record, CD or tape collection. This time around we feature the CD collection of the Head of Dropout Media, keynote speaker, writer, record label exec and all-American sweetheart Matt Bacon.

The first CD I ever bought with my own money was…

Ozzy’s classic Osmosis. I remember I bought it when I was in Dubai on a family trip. Remember I grew up in a generation where we didn’t really buy CD’s so I’m not even sure why that was the CD I picked up. I do like that record though!

The CD that made me want to make music was…

Led Zeppelin I. The EXPLOSIVE guitar playing on “Good Times Bad Times” had me hooked from the first, even as a little kid I was scraping my jaw off the floor from what the band had done. It’s such a thrilling record with so many powerful and weird emotions throughout.

The CD I’ve played more than any other is…

Jimmy Buffett’s Songs You Know By Heart. I wish this was a joke. Jimmy Buffett is my most played artist on Spotify and one of my favorite artists ever. I live an extremely high stress lifestyle and there’s nothing quite like some Jimmy Buffett to get my head back into the right space and calm me down. I am living the life of a 56 year old divorced white guy, I know.

The CD that always make me feel good is…

KISS’s Alive. This is a record that has always sort of resonated with me. It speaks to the bands incredible skill and live show at that time. This was a band who came out of nowhere with one of the best sounding rock and roll ‘live’ records ever.

The CD I turn to when I’m feeling down is…

Subrosa’s More Constant Than The Gods. For a four year period my life REVOLVED around Subrosa. I saw them twenty times in four different countries. Former members are among my best friends. This record brings me back to so many of those times and how lucky I am to have such great relationships with those guys.

The CD with my favorite cover art is…

Am I allowed to mention a band twice? Because if I am it’s KISS’s Destroyer. I have a full size poster of the cover in my apartment and I love it. It’s a record that makes the band look like superheroes and I feel like this art was just as influential as anything else that the band did sonically.

The strangest CD I own is…

This is a weird one. Probably some of the Prophecy Productions special editions that I’ve got. I’m so lucky to get to work with those guys, we have some of the best packaging in the game with nifty cutouts and all sorts of multilayered packaging. There’s cardboard within cardboard and it’s so fun to pick apart some of those Prophecy releases.

The rarest CD I own is…

Oh man… I’ve given away a lot of my favorite CD’s over the ages. I think technically the rarest is gotta be the masters from this band Blackwulf. I think I was the second person in the world to have those masters and the CD is custom done with my name on it!

The last CD I bought was…

The last CD I got was from my friend Coppé for her record Milk, the art is so cool! She was kind enough to give it to me after her NYC gig on this last tour. Coppé is from Japan and does some amazing avant-garde stuff.
